Showers

Regular showers can help rid your body of any foreign bacteria that can be contributing to the creation of acne, especially if you’re sweating a lot. A buildup of dirt, oil, and bacteria can cause a breakout- so make sure you’re hopping into the shower to help clear pores.

Exfoliation is an important part of a skincare routine that you shouldn’t skip. Yes, our skin sheds dead skin cells in its own process, but when shedding, the skin can cling on and not completely fall off. The extra skin can cause a blockage which in turn, will cause acne. Using a gentle exfoliator about twice a week is a good way to make sure you’re letting your pores breathe healthily.

There are great over-the-counter body washes that contain ingredients such as salicylic acid that helps dry out any active pimples. Using a soap targeted to fighting acne is a great way to reduce it. Everytime you hop in the shower, simply wash the affected areas with the cleanser.

Clothing

After working out or running around all day, your clothes can get pretty dirty from outside factors and your body sweat. As soon as you can, get into some fresh clothes as dirty clothes can cause your body to break out. Similarly, make sure your clothes aren’t too tight if you have existing acne, as it can cause irritation and increase the redness.

Sheets

How often are you changing your bedsheets? Overnight, we tend to sweat. Some may do more than others, but in the end, we all do it. Along with sweating, we’re also shedding our dead skin cells, letting our oils seep into the bed, and just getting the bed dirty. Not changing your sheets allows for things like this to accumulate and cause further acne. The sleep foundation recommends changing your sheets at least once a week to make sure we’re getting into clean beds to rest up (we also wrote about the health benefits of it here)!

Non-comedogenic lotions, or non-clogging lotions are a good way to moisturize your skin without causing clogs in your pores that can further lead to acne. If possible, fragrance free non-comedogenic lotions will be your best bet to reduce the possibility of irritation.

There are many options for over-the-counter spot treatments that you apply over problem areas that help minimize the size of acne. While there are special formulas made by dermatologists, there are also homemade remedies that you can use such as tea tree oil to treat problem areas.

Hydration

Make sure you are always staying hydrated! Drinking water allows your body to rid itself of toxins, moisturizes the skin, allows it to remain supple, and gets collagen working. We wrote a really popular article about all the wonderful health benefits of drinking 3 Liters of water a day, so start a new habit today!

Diet

Eating an unhealthy diet can affect our bodies tremendously. In fact, a study showed that foods that have a high glycemic index (GI) raise your blood sugar and cause acne flare-ups. Make sure your diet is balanced with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and protein.

Hair

If you have long hair that lays on your back or sits on your forehead, this can be causing acne. The oils on your hair sit on the area and add oil and dirt to the skin which, in turn, causes acne. In addition, when washing your hair, make sure when washing your hair, you get all residual shampoo and conditioner off your body when rinsing. The leftover soaps can cause clogged pores due to their ingredients.

Not always, The product labels are full of complex chemicals names that you can barely pronounce. despite the confusion these substances continue to be used as ingredients in our beauty care products . Here are the top 10 common chemicals to avoid from here on out and why they should be nixed from the process that makes us even more beautiful than before.

  • Coal Tar Dyes: Used in permanent hair dye and many cosmetics, these chemicals can be identified as C.I and then followed by five numerical digits, or in the US they can be identified by “FD&C” or “DC” and then the name of a color. One that is particularly common in darker hair dyes is called P-phenylenediamine. These dyes are petroleum byproduct and known carcinogens to humans.  At times, they are contaminated by heavy metals or trace amounts of aluminum. In some cases, it can even increase the risks of ADHD. So next time you’re getting your roots touched up, look for a brand that only uses natural dyes.
  • BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid): A common ingredient in over the counter moisturizers and makeup,  this chemical interferes with hormone functions. BHA’s are closely related to preservatives in makeups like lipstick and moisturizer to give it a longer shelf life. It’s also under consideration as a potential carcinogen. Because it can seep through the skin it also is prone to inducing allergic reactions. Is that perfect shade of red lipstick really worth all of this?
  • Formaldehyde – Releasing Preservatives: Formaldehyde causes cancer. No if ands or buts, this is a well-established carcinogen that appears frequently in a wide range of cosmetics from deodorant to nail polish. Some of the most common ones are Methenamine, DMDM, and Quaternium-15. Some studies have shown that you can absorb formaldehyde through your skin, and even though this substance does occur naturally, the compounding amounts used in our beauty care products are beyond the expected exposure levels.
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate: Found in your foamy products like cleansers and bubble bath gel, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) lead to cancer if they become contaminated by 1,4 -dioxane. SLES is detrimental to liver health, and a skin, eyes, and lung irritant. Over-exposure has in some cases been a cause of depression and some researchers suspect that it has the ability to cause the layers of the skin separate from one another and swell, leading to a compromised immune system in your skin. When looking at the ingredients label, be very wary of words with the ending “-eth” (as in laureth). But there is good news to combat this beauty regimen travesty: sulfate free products do not contain this compound, and it’s very trendy to be sulfate free. Just make sure you look for these alternatives.
  • Parabens: These are easy to spot because if it’s present, it is clearly in an ingredient name: for example there is methylparaben and ethylparaben. Used as a preservative in most cosmetics, it prevents fungal growth; however this chemical isn’t all rainbows and sunshine – parabens are quite toxic and commonly associated with breast cancer. They seep through the skin with ease and interrupt natural hormone functions, typically forcing the body to produce an excess of estrogen – a grower of breast cancer cells – even male hormone functions are affected by this chemical. Not only are your breasts at risk, but when parabens in the skin react with UVB light (found in sunlight) it leads to accelerated skin aging due to increased skin and DNA damage. So your foundation may last for an extended period of time, but your body might as well be in an aging time-lapse machine.
  • DEA (diethanolamine): DEA can typically be found in your creamy moisturizers, sunscreens, and shampoos. When they bond with the  nitrites – added as an anticorrosive – in cosmetics, they form the nitrosamine carcinogen. Used to create a creamy, sudsy texture and temper the acidity of a product, DEA will irritate the eyes and skin, but high levels exposure have led to thyroid problems and liver cancer. Now it’s not necessary to fear for your life at this point, but you need to monitor the levels of exposure you have to this chemical; look for sunscreen, shampoo, and moisturizer alternatives to incorporate into your routine.
  • Petrolatum: Curious why this sounds mildly familiar? Maybe you know it by its other name; Petroleum Jelly. Yes, ladies and gentlemen petroleum jelly. Used to lock in the moisture in your skin and lips, this is a common ingredient in moisturizer, lip balm, and hydrating lipstick. Now here is the good news: on its own it is not harmful to you, but if it has been contaminated by PAH’s- the contaminant in mineral oil – then it becomes an issue. Prolonged exposure to contaminated petrolatum can be linked to cancer. So what you need to take away from this is that you need to know the purity of this product before you buy it: if it’s pure then you are 100% in the clear, carry on about your moisturizing.
  • Mineral Oil: Found in baby oils, lotions, and soaps, this is most harmful if it has been poorly refined. Because mineral oil is commonly contaminated with PAH’s (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: in layman’s terms it’s a probable carcinogen), when it is absorbed by your skin, the chemicals that seep into your body slowly damage your liver. Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum that clogs your pores while inhibiting your skin’s ability to get rid of the toxins in your body. Thus, an ingredient that sounds so lovely and natural in fact causes acne and premature wrinkles along with other signs of early aging such as slowing your cell development rates. Let’s find something else to slather on our skin shall we? Perhaps a nice, organic coconut oil.
  • Triclosan: Used in antibacterial substances in your beauty regimen such as toothpaste, deodorant, cleanser, facial tissues, and even laundry detergent, triclosan is absorbed through the skin and has been found to disrupt your body’s hormone functions and its ability to balance these hormones. You can’t just wash this stuff down the drain and expect it to go away forever: this chemical doesn’t break down into its components with ease and is quite harmful to water environments. Check your ingredients label next time to make sure that you aren’t putting your body at risk when all you want to do is be clean. I know it sounds scary, but there are plenty  of products on the market that will not put your body in danger while you are using them.
  • Aluminum: Though we love to wrap our food in this metal, it’s best left outside of our bodies.Found commonly in your deodorants, body sprays, and even feminine hygiene products, aluminum has been found as a cause or contributing factor to both Alzheimer’s Disease and breast cancer when excessive exposure has occurred. Aluminum when in the body essentially acts as a pore plug for a short period of time. During the time when this ‘plug’ is in effect, toxins cannot be removed from the body through sweat or oils, and thus the toxins that would be released are sent back into the bloodstream where they can bond to our red and white blood cells and given time, they will have the potential to cause microvascular strokes, which in turn lead to even bigger issues

Bandana, Coffee Filter, & Rubber Bands: No Sewing Needed!

  • Fold a coffee filter in half so that the top is lined up. Cut off the bottom of the coffee filter.
  • Place the coffee filter in the center of the bandana, then fold the top and bottom of the bandana over the coffee filter (should be in thirds).
  • Place rubber bands or hair ties around the folded bandana about 6 inches apart.
  • Fold in the sides of the bandana and tuck the edges in.
  • Put the bandana over your mouth and stretch the rubber bands over your ears.

How to Make Homemade Hand Sanitizer

Materials:

  • ¾ cup of Rubbing Alcohol or Isopropyl with a 99% alcohol content
  • ¼ cup of Aloe Vera gel
  • 10 drops of Tea Tree oil, Lavender oil, or Lemon juice

Instructions:

  1. Pour all ingredients into a bowl
  2. Mix with a spoon until items are blended
  3. Once items are blended, beat with a whisk to turn the sanitizer into a gel
  4. Pour ingredients into an empty bottle and label it “hand sanitizer” for safety.

*Tip: When wanting to make an effective hand sanitizer, stick to a 2:1 ratio of alcohol to aloe vera. This keeps the alcohol content to approximately 60% which is the minimum amount needed to kill most germs according to the CDC.

Here are some ways to protect your skin from the dry weather, as well as prevent dry skin from happening in the first place!

Exfoliate: Get rid of those dead skin cells as soon as they appear by using an exfoliator once a week. Using a scrub for your body will remove the dry skin, as well as give you a silky smooth finish. A great scrub to try out would be a sugar scrub, they are all natural and don’t have any harsh chemicals that will end up drying your skin out.

Drybrush: Going along the lines of exfoliating, “drybrushing” is an effective way to get in there and really scrub out all those dry skin cells. All you do is get a natural bristle brush and work a scrub into your skin and brush away all the gross dead skin. Not only does it dust away the layer of dry skin sitting on your arms, it also buffs away cellulite and stimulates blood flow within your body. Who would’ve known taking care of your skin externally can also helps your body internally?

Get enough rest: We cannot stress enough how important getting enough sleep is! Your body can’t properly function without rest, so how is your skin expected to be flawless? Your skin tells the world you haven’t been getting your 8 hours, so relax with some lavender oils when you go to bed to get your most restful sleep yet.

Moisturize: There’s no such thing as using too much lotion, especially in the fall. Lotion is made up of fats and oils that keep your skin looking fresh and brand new. Sailors reported that the entire sea smelled of incense to announce her arrival, both in attempt to seduce the Roman warlord and as a statement of her identity. The ancient Egyptians were famous for their lavish use of cosmetics and perfume and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt and taste-maker of the Mediterranean, was doubly so. The ambitious leader was rarely scene in public without a face made up of blush, lipstick, multicolored eyeshadow, darkened eyebrows and flattened eyelashes.

Cosmetics are an essential component of ever-changing beauty standards, but have been in vogue for thousands of years. These beauty standards have also led to serious mental physical and health issues for women. In today’s hyper-consumer society this effect is multiplied by a constant barrage of high-def photoshopped ads featuring radiant and flawless models. The endless parade of cosmetics products is complicit.

So is it fair to call cosmetics the industry of insecurity? Just as Cleopatra used beauty products to further her own political objectives, Historian Kathy Piess writes that “not only tools of deception and illusion, these little jars tell a rich history of women’s ambitions, pleasure, and community.” After all, makeup empowers the human drive for creativity, self-expression, and the appreciation of aesthetics.

So what’s the deal? In our investigation of beauty standards, body image, and self-love, we investigate the history of cosmetics to determine their impact on health. In the first of a two part series, we explore the health consequences and history of cosmetics from ancient Egypt to the French Revolution. 

Contour Like An Egyptian

Religious, aesthetic, and health concerns influenced the decision to wear makeup in ancient Egypt. When the Egyptians applied makeup, they did so liberally. The iconic Egyptian eyeliner we know from hieroglyphs and Hollywood actually had health benefits. It cast off the bright desert sun and warded off common eye diseases.

As scientist Philippe Water found, “In stimulating non-specific immunological defences, one may argue that these lead compounds were deliberately manufactured and used in ancient Egyptian formulations to prevent and treat eye illnesses by promoting the action of immune cells.”

Unfortunately, the makeup had some insidious side effects. Green malachite, like the kind Cleopatra wore on her lower eyelids, came from copper. Black kohl was lead-based. Egyptian aristocrats mixed these poisonous chemicals with duck fat and applied the fatty globs to their face with a flat blush.

Deadly fat-lead mixtures also adorned Roman faces across the sea. But while both Egyptian men and women put on a face each day at court, cosmetics were (supposedly) the domain of women in the Western countries. Ovid, a Roman poet and the self-proclaimed most fashionable man in the Empire, commented that, while perfectly acceptable, women’s makeup was supposed to be understated and naturalistic, the little jars hidden from the view of guests.

Perfumes, on the other hand, were used by Greeks and Romans to cleanse and purify the environment. More austere men still looked down on perfume and makeup, but its religious and health connotations are undeniable. Seneca, for example, thought makeup caused the decline of Roman morality. 

The popularity of cosmetics came and went with the fashion trends in ancient Rome, but it did so along the lines of rigidly defined gender roles.

Let Them Wear Lipstick!

The early Christians were decidedly not fans of makeup. They prized asceticism and humility. To them, makeup was vain and decadent. As Christianity waxed the use of cosmetics waned. And while makeup never went away entirely in the West, it faded like cheap lipstick after a long night on the town.

Things started to change in the late 17th century. Religious wars and changing values loosened the expectations on court life, at least in cosmopolitan capitals. The Commercial Revolution brought an influx of consumer goods and increased the breadth and width of materials produced.

This all came to a head in Louis XIV’s France. Historian Morag Martin claims that High Fashion and advertising both emerged during the 18th century, a powerful one-two punch that revived cosmetics from its long slumber. The bright sheen of lipstick shone brightly in the court of the Sun King, and it wasn’t long before it spread throughout the bourgeoisie and aristocracy throughout Europe.

Like the Egyptians, both genders indulged in cosmetics use. Men and women alike wigs and powdered their face. And like ancient Egypt, they sabotaged their health in the process. Eighteenth century women had the habit of blanching their faces with white lead and hid pockmarks under white patches.

As beautifying became a more and more elaborate ritual, men and women prepared a whitening mixture with vinegar, lead, and horse manure to apply to their face. Beautiful. It inflamed eyes, weakened tooth enamel, caused hair-loss, irritated the skin and even killed the heaviest users. 

Ignorance was no excuse. Advertisers hawked makeup by labeling it as medicine, but doctors were well-aware of the poisonous consequences of wearing lead on your face. Despite this, the cosmetics and medical industries were intimately intertwined. The same men who sold health cures also sold cosmetics. So the modern “health and beauty” section you see in department stores has origins from this era.

Cosmetics use grew more and more exaggerated throughout the century before reaching a fever pitch on the brink of the French Revolution. The height of wigs had grown as high as the anger with the Royal court. By the 1780’s wigs towered up to 18 inches high. When all hell broke with loose after angry Parisians stormed the Bastille, cosmetics use saw a precipitous decline. Jacobins associated cosmetics with Marie Antoinette and the artifice of her entire class.

In retrospect, cosmetics have been sabotaging health for years, but, Paradoxically, have also been associated with health and have had some health benefits.

The role of cosmetics continued to change over the next two centuries, which we will explore in the next article!

Here’s another reason to get moving: Regular exercise is one of the keys to healthy skin.

“We tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skinhealthy and vibrant,” says dermatologist Ellen Marmur, MD, author of Simple Skin Beauty: Every Woman’s Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy, Gorgeous Skin and associate professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

If you have dermatological conditions such as acne, rosacea, or psoriasis, you may need to take special care to keep your skin protected while exercising. But don’t let skin problems prevent you from being active. Here’s why.

By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. “Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin,” says Marmur. In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products, including free radicals, from working cells. Contrary to some claims, exercise doesn’t detoxify the skin. The job of neutralizing toxins belongs mostly to the liver. “But by increasing blood flow, a bout of exercise helps flush cellular debris out of the system,” Marmur tells WebMD. “You can think of it as cleansing your skin from the inside.”

Exercise has also been shown to ease stress. “And by decreasing stress, some conditions that can be exacerbated by stress can show some improvement,” says Brian B. Adams, MD, associate professor and director of the Sports Dermatology Clinic at the University of Cincinnati. Conditions that can improve when stress is reduced include acne and eczema. Although researchers are still investigating the link between stress and skin, studies show that the sebaceous glands, which produce oil in the skin, are influenced by stress hormones.

Regular exercise helps tone muscles, of course. That doesn’t have a direct affect on skin, dermatologists say. But firmer muscles definitely help you look better overall.

The Healthy Skin Workout

For all its many benefits, however, exercise can pose risks to your skin. Fortunately, protecting your skin is easy.

“The main danger if you exercise outdoors is sun exposure,” says April Armstrong, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, Davis. Sunburns increase skin cancer risk and rapidly age the skin, erasing any benefits your skin might get from exercise. The best advice is to avoid exercising outside during peak sun time, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

If you have to work out during peak sun time, however, wear sunscreen. “A lot of athletes are reluctant to put on sunscreen because it gets into their eyes when they sweat and stings,” says Marmur. “But new Ph-balanced sunscreens are now available that don’t sting.” If you have naturally oily skin or problems with acne, choose a gel or oil-free product or the latest innovation, powder laced with SPF protection.

Don’t count of sunscreen alone to protect you, however. “Sweating can remove the sunscreen that athletes put on and there is evidence that sweating actually increases the chance of burning,” Adams tells WebMD. “After athletes sweat, it takes 40% less ultraviolet rays to burn than when they are not sweating.” For added protection, wear clothes that cover as much skin as possible and a hat to shade your face, if possible.

Another skin problem that can arise during activity is chafing, which can cause rashes. For people prone to acne, the irritation and increased perspiration caused by tight-fitting workout clothes may lead to a form of acne aptly called acne mechanica. “The two keys to prevention are to wear moisture-wicking clothing, such as bras and hats, to keep skin drier and cooler and to shower immediately after exercising,” says Adams. Wearing loose-fitting workout clothes can also help. Make sure your skin is clean before you work out to prevent clogged pores that lead to acne. Avoid wearing makeup when you exercise. After showering, apply a soothing skin moisturizer or powder to help prevent skin irritation.

Rx for Exercise-Related Skin Problems

Several other skin conditions can be exacerbated by physical activity, including rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. That’s no reason not to exercise, dermatologists say. The benefits of exercise outweigh any temporary problems it can cause. And there are simple strategies to prevent flare-ups when you work out.

For rosacea sufferers, increased body temperature and the skin flushing that accompany exercise can cause flare-ups. The best strategy, dermatologists say, is to exercise in a cool environment. “One of the best choices is swimming, since the water keeps skin cool even when you build up body temperature,” Marmur told WebMD. (Be sure to moisturize your skin afterward, however, since chlorine has a drying effect.) Brisk walking in an air-conditioned mall or waiting until the cool of the evening to jog outside are other good options. “If you do get flushed and overheated while exercising, apply cool compresses to problem areas of the skin immediately after your workout,” says Andrea Cambio, MD, a private practice dermatologist in Cape Coral, Fla.

Eczema or psoriasis sufferers can also experience flare-ups after strenuous activity, usually caused by salt from perspiration. Marmur recommends spreading on a moisturizer before a workout to provide protection from sweat. Be especially careful to moisturize your arms and legs and areas with skin creases, such as underarms and groin. If possible, exercise in a cool environment to reduce perspiration and the need for showering after exercise. Washing too often can cause dryness and exacerbate eczema and psoriasis.

“Physical activity can definitely pose a challenge, but we encourage all our patients with psoriasis and eczema to exercise to improve their overall health,” says Armstrong. Despite the occasionally temporary flare-ups, she adds, many patients see their conditions improve in the long term.
