Houston’s Most Scenic Trails

Staying active is one of the key ingredients to living a long healthy life. In general, a person should aim to exercise for at least thirty minutes a day, whether going to the gym, to a workout class or simply doing a workout from the comfort of their home. The most popular form of exercise is walking and running, which can be done at any time and anywhere throughout the day. To be considered an active individual, a person must take more than 10,000 steps per day, and what better way to do that than to go to one of the many scenic running trails in Houston, Texas? 

Memorial Park

  • Memorial Park: Many may not know that this popular running trail is actually named The Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail, and features tennis courts, a swimming pool, a fitness center, playing fields, and more! One single lap around this trail is equivalent to 2.88 miles! A fantastic option for joggers and walkers alike! 

Buffalo Bayou Park

  • Buffalo Bayou Park: This 160-acre, 10-foot wide trail allows walkers, runners, and cyclists to share a path at all hours of the day! The trail is even popular amongst skateboarders as well! The Buffalo Bayou Park is also animal friendly, so you are more than welcome to bring your furry friend with you to get your daily steps in. Some even say Buffalo Bayou Park is “the crown jewel of Houston.” 

Rice University Loop

  • Rice University Loop: This 3-mile trail is great for individuals who like solitude while getting their work out. This beautiful trail takes, on average, fifty-two minutes to complete and, because of the beautiful Oak trees, is also one of the shadiest trails in town! That way, you can stay cool and relaxed as you get in your daily dose of exercise. 

Hermann Park

  • Hermann Park: This Park is in the middle of Houston! Central to many attractions Houston has to offer, like the Houston Zoo, Japanese and McGovern Centennial Gardens, and more. This 445-acre Park features the two-mile Marvin Taylor Jogging Trail. Amongst the trail, you will get beautiful views of the golf course, lakes, and bridges, with trees that date back over a century!

Buffalo Bend Nature Park

  • Buffalo Bend Nature Park: The Yolanda Black Navarro Buffalo Bend Nature Park is ten acres of recreation and wildlife conservation. What used to be a construction fill is now a gorgeous park that homes three wetland ponds, hike and biking trails, and beautiful plants and nature! 

Terry Hershey Park

  • Terry Hershey Park: Terry Hershey Park is over ten miles of walking, hiking, and biking trails. This trial provides routes from Barker Dam to Texas Beltway 8 and even the Sam Houston Tollway! If you want to do more than just walking, running, or hiking, the Park also has a playground, areas to picnic, exercise stations, and a butterfly garden! 

Gavelston Island

  • Galveston Island: Who doesn’t love a good beach view? Galveston Island has ten miles of beaches, ocean views, and “the nation’s largest continuous sidewalk.” Galveston Island has a temperature climate that allows visitors all year round with outdoor activities like fishing, golfing, biking, jogging, and more! There is a limitless amount of activities to do that will keep you active and entertained for hours, and a great place to spend time with family or simply enjoy your own company. 

George Bush Park

  • George Bush Park: Named after the 41st president of the United States, George Bush Park is a major attraction to many Houston residents. With almost 7,800 acres worth of activities, this nature reserve has everything from jogging trails, biking trails, playgrounds, two soccer fields, a shooting range, and more, with beautiful views of the forest, ponds, and bayous!

George Mitchell Nature Preserve

  • George Mitchell Nature Preserve: Located in The Woodlands, this nature reserve is almost 1,700 acres and 220 miles of biking, hiking, and running trails. The George Mitchell Nature Preserve has 150 parks throughout the ”Township”. With wildlife everywhere and beautiful plants lining the trails, this preserve is as picturesque as it gets. 

Paul Carr Jogging Trail

  •  Paul Carr Jogging Trail: In the middle of Heights Boulevard homes, the Paul Carr Jogging Trail. This trail is known for its awe-worthy monuments and sculptures and the beautiful architecture of the houses that are among the trails that make you want to go on Zillow the second you get home. The two-mile trail is fantastic for keeping your children entertained and getting in your steps. 

Brays Bayou Greenway

  • Brays Bayou Greenway: This thirty-one-mile Bayou is great for biking and jogging trails! Easily accessible through Hermann Park and the University of Houston campus. Brays Bayou Greenway is great for getting your steps in and is also connected to other trails that you may also like as well!

New to Houston and looking for some activities that will help you explore the Houston area or make new friends? Or do you simply want to connect with fellow Houstonians while staying active? If the answer to these questions is a resounding yes, join these 10 running groups in Houston, Texas! 

ZFT Run Club

The Zone Fitness Training is open to all levels and free for members! Zone Fitness Training is committed to improving the lives of their members by combining physical and social activities. Founded on Juneteenth in 2017, the ZFT running club commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people and celebrates African American Culture! This diversifying club is determined to uplift the Houston community through running and fitness and be a beacon of happy, healthy, and more fulfilled life for the Black community. They also have a sister club in Dallas with an “Inspire, Instruct, and Improve” slogan, and both clubs believe that running can and should be enjoyed by all. 

BON Running Club

Open for all levels and free to join, BON Running Club holds weekly runs of 5km and ends their runs at their favorite bars for socializing and winding down. Members shared that their favorite feature of the BON Running Club is how relaxed, fun, and focused on fitness it is! BON Running Club raises awareness and money for organizations like Undies for Everyone, Girls on the Run Greater Houston, Muscular Dystrophy Association, and more! 

West End Running Club

Very similar to the Bon Running Club, the West End Running Club is open to all levels and free to join, meeting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Like the BON Running Club, West End hosts weekly runs that begin and end at their favorite bars. The West End Running Club allows members to determine their run pace and offers a 2-6 mile course. Both BON and West End Running Club require little commitment but have a meaning and positive impact on the community and the lives of its members. West End Running Club also supports Achilles International Organization. 

Njord Running

Njord Running Club is a fantastic option for those who want to have an impact on their community and the planet! Free to members and open to all levels, Njord Running Club was founded by competitive runners who felt a calling to empower and encourage a community. They host two runs a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays and have encouraging comments from their members saying that this running club is open to all but especially those who are “passionate runners and seek a more invigorating experience.” 

Runner’s High Club

Runners High Club is open to beginners and advanced runners! While they do have a membership fee of $75 for half marathon training and $95 for marathon training, too many, it is well worth it because of the detailed training plans and paced group runs that help their members achieve their running goals! They meet every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and encourage those whose primary goal is improving their running abilities! This running club is great for beginners or people who are low in motivation and looking for a slow introduction into running and one day want to reach a specific goal. You don’t have to be an avid runner to join, and you don’t even have to run if you don’t feel like it! They encourage the idea of running. They also believe that a good run needs an even better feast at the end, going for pretzels after running on Wednesdays and a post-run breakfast on Sundays. They even have award banquets and Christmas Parties! Even though this club is popular for beginners, those at a more advanced level and want to feel part of a community are more than welcome to join!

Houston Harriers

This run club has been thriving since 1975 and is for all levels ranging from intermediate to advanced. They have a $25 annual membership fee and meet twice a week on Mondays and Saturdays. This run club is known for their excellent coaching and is dedicated to athletic development through healthy competition. Their main goal is to bring attention to competitive running in Houston and focus on training and the development of athletes. This club is praised for their dedication to running but also for allowing its members to choose their “own adventures” by letting them choose their pace, the routes they take, and for how long. 

In Flight Running

This run club is open for all abilities and levels! The In Flight Running Club allows its members to learn about the sport of running “from the ground up” and help discover their personal best! They offer professional coaching, support and have running groups! Even if you aren’t training for a race, the In-Flight Run club welcomes those who want to improve their running, start a running maintenance schedule, get in shape, lose weight, or meet new running friends! Although they are open to all running paces, they encourage those who can run a continuous 3 miles before joining. As a member of In Flight Running club, you are provided with an online training schedule, easily accessible training and race schedule from your smartphone, daily emails that update you on your running schedule, and more! Houston Area Road Runners Association

This association is a volunteer, nonprofit organization of runners who are dedicated to providing support and advocating for the running community in Southeast Texas. Founded in 1993, this association promotes running “as a competitive sport and a healthful exercise in the greater Houston area.” This association offers a voice on problems that affect runners in the Houston area, and they also have club activities and competitions that are beneficial to club members and the Houston running society. Heights Running Club

Heights Running Club is a great network for runners and walkers. They aim to help motivate members to reach their goals while maintaining a fun environment. In the months leading up to the race, challenges loomed large. Financial constraints, logistical hurdles, and uncertainties threatened to derail this beloved annual event. Yet, Mayor Whitmire stepped up, determined to keep the wheels turning. Mayor Whitmire’s tireless efforts behind the scenes ensured that the Tour de Houston became a reality. His negotiations with stakeholders, creative problem-solving, and unwavering dedication turned the tide.

A Unique Perspective

The Tour de Houston isn’t just a bike race; it’s a chance for Houstonians and visitors alike to explore our city’s historic neighborhoods, scenic districts, and parks. With three ride length options, from leisurely to challenging, participants experience Houston from a unique vantage point.

The 17th edition of the race took place on April 7th, 2024, and it served as a fundraiser for the city’s RE-Plant Houston Program, which aims to plant thousands of trees across the city. As cyclists pedaled through the streets, they knew they were part of something special. The post-ride party at Discovery Green buzzed with excitement—music, free food, and camaraderie filled the air. Mayor Whitmire’s vision had come to life.

Located south of the Museum District and north of the Medical center, this 445-acre park features plenty of cute spots to unwind and get lost in a book. Some of the best spots in the park to read are the Japanese Garden, the Hawkins Sculpture Walk, Lake Plaza, the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool, the McGovern Centennial Gardens, and more.

The Japanese Garden features crepe myrtles, azaleas, Japanese maples, dogwoods, and cherry trees. The Hawkins sculpture walk includes ten busts of notable figures from around the world, surrounded by a lush, small garden with lots of benches. The Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool, which is 740 feet long and 80 feet wide, is lined on both sides with mature live oak trees. The McGovern Centennial Gardens features a rose garden, an arid garden, a 30-foot garden mount, etc. These are all cute places to go and get lost in a new world in a book. 

Cockrell Butterfly Center

Located inside of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which is located in the heart of the museum district, this three-story enclosure is breathtaking. Filled with over 60 of the world’s largest and most colorful butterfly species, this place is perfect to feel like you’re inside a rainforest with your book. 

Bebidas Coffee

This fan-favorite coffee shop, located in River Oaks, is the perfect place to unwind with a book and a yummy coffee. Their menu features smoothies, juices, coffees, teas, and small bites. The best part is their outdoor patio, which is covered by beautiful trees. Often, the sun is out but it never feels like too much in this stunning 

Segundo Coffee Lab

Located in East Downtown, this cozy mom-and-pop coffee shop features drinks infused with CBD and Delta-8. Known as Houston’s first container coffee shop. With fresh pastries and food made every day, this place makes it easy to sit and read for hours. 

Houston Public Library

With three locations, each located in Rice Village, Montrose, Downtown, and more, the public library is the perfect place to read and relax. Located north of Montrose and a few miles west of Minute Maid Park, lies Buffalo Bayou Park. This 160 acres park features over 20 miles worth of trails to enjoy! Located along Montrose Boulevard, this 1.16 acre park features hundreds of live Oak Trees. Opening in 1970, this small park is named after Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Bell, Jr., who donated the park to the city. Water elements are a large part of the overall design and make this park even more inviting.

Named after Yolanda Black Navarro, this 23 acre park is a beauty. Located inside of Buffalo Bayou Park, this park includes many fun features. Located inside is Joe & Jamail Skatepark, the shady Grove Victim Memorial, a Henry Moore sculpture entitled “Large Spindle Piece“, the Houston Police Officers’ Memorial, Glenwood Cemetery, the San Felipe playground, jogging trails, and a sand pit which can be used for volleyball.

Best Places to Bike in Houston

Houston currently offers a 345-mile interconnected bikeway network spanning 500 square miles of the city. The network includes bike lanes, bike routes, shared lanes and bayou trails, rails to trails, and other urban multi-use paths. This network does not include 80 miles of hike and bike and nature trails found in City of Houston parks. Cyclists travel on designated bikeways and merge onto bicycle-friendly streets to complete their journey. Houston’s future bike plan calls for almost 1,800 miles of new high-comfort bike lanes-or lanes that are safe for all ages throughout the city… Houston is about to get a reputation for being a lot more bikeable!

Buffalo Bayou Loop

White Oak Bayou Greenway 

White Oak Bayou Greenway is a 16.5 mile point to point trail in Houston, Texas that has a 390 ft elevation rise. It is considered an easy route. The trail connects people to the downtown area, transit centers and recreational areas.

The White Oak Bayou Greenway trail also intersects with the Houston Heights Hike and Bike Trail three times, passing through the historic Heights and Woodland Heights communities.

The Quail Trail from Sam Houston Tollway 

The Quail Trail from Sam Houston Tollway is a 11.7-mile out and back trail in Houston, Texas that is a popular trail for mountain biking and road biking but most commonly used by runners and road cyclists. The trail is on the northern bank of the Buffalo Bayou. This is one of several entrances to this trail.

Gene Green Beltway 8 Loop 

This trail is a 2 mile loop trail in Houston, Texas that is generally considered an easy route. The trail takes about 36 minutes to complete and is great for road biking, running, and walking.

Healthy Things to Do at Memorial Park

Memorial Park Conservancy is popular amongst Houstonians for its plethora of fun and healthy activities to do with family and friends or simply by yourself. Memorial Park is going through a ten-year and $205 million renovation to transform the park into an Oasis for its residents, and plans for completion in 2028. Nearly twice as big as Central Park in New York City and open during all four seasons, Memorial Park is a great place to get your daily exercise in, enjoy the outdoors, and relax with nature and the beautiful scenery. The park’s mission is to Preserve, Restore, and Enhance Memorial Park for all Houstonians today and tomorrow. So far, many Houstonians agree that the park has exceeded its mission. 

If you ever find yourself enjoying a day at Memorial Park, here are the Top 10 healthy and fun activities you can do during your time at Memorial Park. 

Mountain Biking

At the park, the trails located in the Bayou Wilds are amazing for Mountain Bikers. The Mountain Biking is designed to the speed and geometry of the bikes, with color-coded maps and trailhead signs, for guaranteed safety. 

Croquet

The croquet court is across from the Memorial Park Tennis Center and is often frequented by the Houston Croquet Association. Though it may seem like an easy game, the mental clarity, focus, and precision required to be successful at Croquet may surprise you, and the health benefits that come along with it are vast, which you can read about here.

Golf

The Memorial Park Golf Course is considered one of the best municipal courses in the country! The course now has a state-of-the-art water retention system and new grasses. The Astros Golf Foundation funded the project and hired world-renowned Architect Tom Doak for the renovation. The course plans to Host the Houston Open this year from November 10-13. Not to mention this golf course is one of two public PGA courses that are open to the public for $25!

Indoor Fitness and Swimming

The Memorial Park Fitness Center has a variety of weight and resistance equipment with trainers, and the pool is open during the summer season. Daily or monthly memberships are available at a small fee. Learning to swim is often the only hurdle you have to face, but with time and consistent effort, it can be an easy skill to acquire that comes with a multitude of benefits in return.

Tennis

The Memorial Park Tennis Center has 18 hard surface courts, a pro shop with lockers, and a practice wall. They also have leagues, tournaments, lessons, and corporate outings available for visitors. Tennis is a great activity that can keep you in shape no matter your age, and it keeps your cardiovascular and muscular systems in top shape even as you age.

Hiking

The park has over thirty miles for running, walking, and hiking. All hiking trails are measured and designed according to movement by foot to give guests a safe and active pathway during their hike. Hiking offers tremendous benefits for your physical and mental health and well-being!

Sand Volleyball

The park has four sand volleyball courts with picnic tables, bleachers, and grassy open spaces. Sand volleyball carries all the same health benefits as its indoor cousin and adds a few of its own, thanks to the unique qualities of a sand court, which you can read here

Baseball/Softball

The sports fields are on both the north and south sides of the park and are available for softball, baseball, soccer, and flag football. However, these fields are only available for league and tournament play. 

Running/Walking

The Seymoure Liberman Exer-trail is 3.0 miles with exercise stations. Many of the trails at Memorial park have been designed to create mobility throughout the park, promote safety, and improve user experience. Each trail and pathway is designed for a specific user group to reduce conflict and give guests a good experience when they come. The Seymoure Liberman trail, in particular, connects to multi-use trails over the Land Bridge, providing easy access to the Running Trail Center and the Timing Track. This pedestrian-only 24/7 trail allows runners to advance their speed and gain better running skills.

Cycling/Skating

The Picnic Loop at Memorial Park is recommended for cyclers and skaters because of its smooth surface, and don’t worry if you don’t own a bike! Bike rentals are available for all guests at the Cullen Running Trails Center and the Picnic Loop! Cycling is one of the best full-body workouts to keep you fit on the outside, but it also helps keep you fit on the inside! And skating is not only a fun activity, but it offers plenty of great health benefits for your body and can be done anywhere, like the Picnic Loop at Memorial Park!

Best Places to Walk Dogs in Houston

Spending time with your dog and staying active are two activities that can go hand-in-hand. Going on walks, going to parks, throwing a ball, etc. There are so many fun activities you can do with your dog! As mentioned in our article about the health benefits of owning a dog, our favorite furry friends can keep you more motivated, active, and happier.  What better way to stay healthy and active than going on walks with your dog in the beautiful city of Houston?

In Houston, dogs are a big part of the city’s culture. Being able to go somewhere and walk or play with your animals is so important, not to mention how many outdoor restaurants have dog-friendly patios. But what are the best places to bring your dog while staying active? 

Houston Arboretum & Nature Center

Located just off of 610 and north of River Oaks (and inside of Memorial Park), is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. It is a 155-acre nature sanctuary that has 5 miles of walking trails that go through forest, meadow, and wetland habitats.

Dogs are welcome anytime! Dogs must stay on a leash and are not allowed in the ponds.  With over 25 mammal species and 167 different bird species, there are plenty of animals for you and your furry friend to discover.   

Discovery Green

Located in the heart of downtown, this 12-acre park is always full of dogs of every shape and size. With events happening all year long, there is plenty for you and your pets to see (and smell!). 

Features an enclosed dog run where your dog can run around without its leash and interact with other dogs. Dogs are even allowed at outdoor events such as concerts, movie screenings, festivals, and more!

Buffalo Bayou Park 

Located north of Montrose and a few miles west of Minute Maid Park, lies Buffalo Bayou Park. This 160 acres park features over 20 miles worth of trails to enjoy with you and your pet! This park features lighted pathways all along the bayou. With the stunning views and amount of dogs that visit daily, your dog and yourself will have a fun, safe walk.

One of the most visited parts of the park is the Johnny Steele Dog park. This 2-acre site features a pond, shade structures, dog washing areas, and drinking fountains for both dogs and people. Dogs can be unleashed inside the enclosed area and able to let loose and visit with other dogs and people.

George Bush Park

Located west of Briarforest, this 7,800-acre park, named after the 41st president George Bush Sr., is an attraction and nature reserve for the Buffalo Bayou. The biking/walking trails, coming out to around 11.4 miles long, are surrounded by swamp, forest, and bayou environments. Named the number one dog park in the country by Chron Magazine.

In the southern portion of the park, lies the Millie Bush Bark Park. This 15-acre fenced dog park features 3 ponds, walkways, and fake fire hydrants. Inside of the Bark Park, dogs are able to be off-leash and able to run around with other dogs freely. 

Memorial Park

 Located right next to the Houston Arboretum and Nature Reserve, this 1,466-acre park features around 2.88 miles of hiking trails and features varying terrain (ranging from extremely “hilly” to completely flat). Known as the “Largest Urban Park in Texas”, Memorial Park features an 18-hole golf course, facilities for tennis, soccer, volleyball, softball, and more. 

Leashed dogs are welcome. The park features multiple different trails, but the fan favorite is the Seymour Lieberman Trail. This trail is pedestrian-only (so no bikes!) and features a crushed granite surface and drinking fountains for both animals and people.

Houston’s Best Farmers Markets

In today’s fast-paced world, most Americans don’t know where their food comes from—let alone who grew it or how it was grown. Our connection to food has diminished to nothing more than a quick transaction at the check-out line, with no thought to who is behind the spinach in our salads or the steak on our grills (read our article about the dangers of food disconnect).

Which is why we love farmer’s markets! The nutrient-rich, locally grown food that you find at farmers markets is not just good for you. It’s also good for your social life. 

Farmers markets are not just places where people buy healthy food; they’re places where people meet, socialize, and have fun together. Research shows that people are happier when they’re socially connected—and farmers markets help to make that happen.

What’s more, the fresh fruits and vegetables that you’ll find at farmers markets have been shown to have positive effects on physical health: a 2012 study in Austin, Texas found that farm stands operating in low-income neighborhoods just one day a week increased the consumption of fruits and vegetables for families within walking distance. Another study conducted in North Carolina concluded that proximity to farmers markets was associated with lower body mass index (BMI) for local youth.
