If you suffer from any number of ailments including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, inflammation, seizures or cancer, you may have considered trying CBD oil to relieve your symptoms. CBD oil is the latest trend to hit the natural medicine scene, but what is it, and, more importantly, is it really effective?
Contrary to popular belief, CBD does not produce a “high” when taken. CBD is just one of many compounds known as cannabinoids that are found in marijuana. The federal government outlawed marijuana in the 1930’s, even making it illegal for scientists to study it, which is why the medical profession today has such limited knowledge on the uses and benefits of the many compounds that are found in it. As public interest and knowledge has grown, and as marijuana use has become more acceptable, states have recently started to update their laws; and products for medical use have become more available.
CBD can currently be purchased in oils, creams, roll on, gummies, oral spray, and other forms. It is advertised as being effective at treating any number of symptoms, but beware that the great majority of these claims have yet to be tested rigorously. After strict clinical trials, the FDA has recently approved a CBD- based medication for the treatment of certain types of epilepsy. Another of the more promising uses that has been developed is a cbd roll on for pain. CBD has been shown in some studies to be effective in treating inflammation when applied topically Preliminary studies show that it may be an effective topical treatment for osteoarthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties as well as its ability to protect joint nerves.
An effective topical treatment for arthritis could be revolutionary for people suffering the life-limiting symptoms of arthritis. Topical formulations can often be a good adjunct to oral medications, often with fewer side effects. Topical forms of CBD need further study to investigate these promising beginnings. There is still a great deal we don’t know about the benefits, risks, interactions and side effects of CBD.
Another issue to be aware of about the use of CBD: there is currently very little regulation in the manufacture of CBD products. CBD production is not regulated by the FDA. A recent study found wide variations in how much CBD was contained in products compared to what was advertised. Make sure that you are buying your CBD products from a reputable source.
And finally, the current legal issues surrounding CBD are hazy at best. All forms of marijuana are currently still outlawed by the federal government, although state laws vary and are changing rapidly. To be safe, check with your local government for laws regarding CBD use in your area. Before trying out a CBD product, it’s a good idea to check with your doctor as well. He/she may be able to help you sort through your particular needs and concerns in regard to it’s safe, legal and effective use.
